Adventures in the sacred — stories, art and songs

The Indigenous Heart

SD Youngwolf

SD Youngwolf Artist Statement

Ranging from figurative to abstract, I work in various media, from drawing and painting to gourd art and masks. I have been greatly influenced by Native heritage and Indigenous culture as well as abstract expressionism and fantastic realism. Drawing and painting from nature as well as imaginative flights of fancy are a doorway to truth for me, and have played an important part in the development of an aesthetic dialogue visible in all my work. In my most “serious” work, I explore geometric and organic forms that merge into archetypal images from the unconscious, pointing to a primal reality underlying all form. I have shown and won numerous awards at Native American art shows across the country. My hope is  that my art  will speak to the viewer’s sense of universal wonder and connection with Earth and Spirit.
